Like a mantra, they were around me, asking for music. There’s no doubt that they were the chorus of a new song. But although I tried really hard to find the rest of the song, it didn’t show up. Nothing sounded apropriated or worthy. I didn’t want to force it. And they stood there, waiting.
Another 8th day, but in February 2012, one of the greatest Argentine rock musicians, Luis Alberto Spinetta, died. One of his daughters was a classmate of the dead students in the tragedy. That hurted him deeply, and he started to colaborate actively with “Conduciendo a conciencia” (“Driving consciously”), an ONG created by the dead students’ parents.
Sometime after Spinetta’s death, like being moved by some kind of celestial puppeteer, the rest of lyrics and music of what today is “Ecos” song, appeared. With it I tribute both, the studentes and Luis Alberto. And I’m certain that as Spinetta’s song “Maribel se durmió” (“Maribel fell asleep”), “they watch us better with their soul”.
